Segment piercing needs a tool?

I’ve got a segment ring that apparently needs a “spreader” in order to open or close. What’s the best method?

The pliers DO work. You just have to practice w/ it off of you first so you can figure out the strength needed just enough to open it w/o sending one side flying across the room. That’s really it.
